Halloween Apple Bread

  • Author: Dianna

Description

There’s nothing like the smell of warm, spiced apple bread wafting through the house, especially when it has a spooky Halloween twist! I first made this Halloween apple bread for a family gathering last fall, and let me tell you, it was an instant hit. The combination of tart apples, rich spices, and a fun drizzle of spooky icing had everyone coming back for seconds. My little niece even asked me if I could make it again for her birthday—not quite Halloween, but who could resist? Whether you’re making it for a Halloween party, family get-together, or just as a festive fall treat, this bread is the perfect blend of cozy and fun.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups peeled and diced apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work great)
  • ½ cup plain Greek yogurt (or sour cream)
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts (optional)

For the Halloween icing drizzle:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • Black food coloring (optional, for spooky effect)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan.
  • Prepare the dry ingredients. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Set aside.
  • Cream the butter and sugar. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Add the eggs and vanilla. Beat the eggs in one at a time, ensuring each is fully incorporated. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Combine wet and dry ingredients. Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients, alternating with the Greek yogurt. Stir until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can make the bread dense.
  • Fold in the apples and nuts. Gently fold in the diced apples and walnuts (if using) until evenly distributed throughout the batter.
  • Bake the bread. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top with a spatula. Bake for 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Cool and decorate. Allow the bread to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely. For the Halloween icing drizzle, whisk together the powdered sugar and milk until smooth. Add black food coloring for a spooky twist, then drizzle it over the cooled bread.
