Ingredients
For the French Toast Batter:
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup milk (whole or 2% for richness)
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Pinch of salt
- 8 slices of bread (thick-cut, day-old bread like brioche or challah works best)
Instructions
. Prepare the French Toast Batter
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. This creates the custard-like batter that will soak into the bread and give it that classic French toast flavor.
2. Preheat Your Waffle Iron
While your batter is coming together, go ahead and preheat your waffle iron. You want it nice and hot, so the waffles cook up crispy on the outside but stay soft inside. Grease the waffle iron with either butter or non-stick spray to prevent sticking.
3. Dip the Bread in the Batter
Take your slices of bread (brioche or challah works great for that rich flavor and soft texture), and dip each slice into the batter, making sure both sides are well-coated but not soaked to the point of falling apart.
4. Place the Bread in the Waffle Iron
Transfer the dipped bread slices into your preheated waffle iron, being careful not to overcrowd the waffle iron. Close the waffle iron and cook according to the manufacturer’s instructions, usually about 3-5 minutes, or until the waffle is golden brown and crispy.
5. Repeat with the Remaining Bread
Once the first batch is done, remove the waffles and repeat the process with the remaining bread slices, continuing to dip each slice in the French toast batter before placing them into the waffle iron.
6. Serve Hot with Toppings
Serve your French Toast Waffles immediately while they’re still warm and crispy. Drizzle with maple syrup, dust with powdered sugar, and top with fresh berries or whipped cream. You can also add a sprinkle of chocolate chips or a dollop of jam for an extra special touch.
